The world’s first: Weichai Power’s hydrogen internal combustion engine achieves a groundbreaking breakthrough in commercializing zero-carbon power solutions.

On July 3, 2026, Weichai Power’s WP15 direct-injection heavy-duty hydrogen internal combustion engine passed rigorous environmental emission certification tests, becoming China’s first—and the world’s first—to achieve full compliance with all core requirements of the National VI emission standards for heavy-duty hydrogen engines, laying a solid foundation for the commercial deployment of zero-carbon heavy-duty equipment.

The WP15 direct-injection heavy-duty hydrogen internal combustion engine has passed rigorous tests under all operating conditions, with pollutant emissions far exceeding national standards and carbon dioxide emissions nearly zero. Leveraging proprietary technologies such as flexible direct injection, it achieves ultra-low nitrogen oxide emissions. When equipped with a simple after-treatment system, the engine complies with future stringent environmental regulations.

The WP15 direct-injection heavy-duty hydrogen internal combustion engine ranks among the world’s top performers in its displacement category. With a displacement of 14.6 L, it delivers a maximum power output of 600 horsepower and a peak torque of 2,800 N·m during testing. The engine achieves a maximum effective thermal efficiency of 46.8%, with over 90% of its components being interchangeable with those of conventional fuel engines, preserving the inherent reliability and durability of internal combustion engines while requiring only low hydrogen purity standards, thereby significantly reducing end-user costs. It is widely applicable to various applications including mainline heavy-duty trucks, mining operations, ports, and power generation units.
