China for the first time! Weichai hydrogen internal combustion engine generator set successfully connected to the grid

Recently, Weichai’s hydrogen internal combustion engine generator set achieved China’s first successful grid-connected operation of pure hydrogen power generation. This milestone marks a crucial step in the commercialization of hydrogen internal combustion engines in China, while also contributing Weichai’s expertise to the development of industrial green microgrids and advancing high-quality growth in hydrogen energy applications.

The Weichai hydrogen internal combustion engine generator set, now connected to the grid, has been deployed at the Wuxi Huaguan Energy Microgrid Demonstration Project. This project serves as an industrial-scale demonstration of source-grid-load-storage integration. As the core unit of the microgrid, the Weichai generator set plays a pivotal role in efficient hydrogen conversion and stable green electricity supply.
The WP13 hydrogen internal combustion engine, developed through customized collaboration between Weichai and Wuxi Huaguan Energy, effectively addresses industry-wide challenges including output power limitations and rotational speed fluctuations caused by unstable hydrogen combustion. With precise rotational speed control maintained within ±3 r/min, this engine meets stringent grid-connected power generation requirements through its high stability. It has successfully established a critical local hydrogen utilization chain for industrial by-product hydrogen, providing robust technical support for the high-quality development of the local zero-carbon industrial park.

This successful grid integration has established a full-chain green energy application model for customers, featuring hydrogen energy conversion, clean power generation, and grid integration. It provides a replicable practical example for the commercial application of hydrogen power generation.
As a pioneer in the research and development of hydrogen internal combustion engines, Weichai, in collaboration with China National Heavy Duty Truck Group, launched the nation’s first commercial hydrogen internal combustion engine heavy truck, pioneering the application path of hydrogen internal combustion engines in the commercial vehicle sector. In the future, Weichai will focus on diverse application scenarios in fields such as transportation, energy, and construction machinery, introducing more economical and reliable integrated solutions for hydrogen internal combustion engines. By driving technological innovation, Weichai aims to accelerate the layout of the entire hydrogen energy industry chain and speed up the transition to a new journey of green and zero-carbon development.
